Primary and Secondary Clutches

In the seven years that C & T Powersports has been making clutch tools and selling parts and accessories, we have become very familiar with both the primary and secondary clutches, and with the parts that are known to wear out or break. I have compiled a list of parts and maintenance with "How To" links.
Many riders take very good care of their snowmobiles but neglect what they are not familiar with.
Clutches are one of the first things that get no attention. Cleaning and maintenance including parts replacement can and will add to the great experience of riding your snowmobile. Regular cleaning of the drive belt and clutch faces is also very important, but we will discuss this in the drive belt topic.

The 800R owners should check these parts yearly as the harmonics of the engine are not easy on clutch components.
Below is a list of  replacement clutch parts that we sell a lot of.  A worn out primary part will not leave you stranded but will have an effect on performance of the sled and often results in low RPMs.

Primary Rollers
Buttons with O-rings
TRA rebuild kits
Spring cups
(due to bushing wear)

The primary clutch spring is another maintenance item and, in most cases, will not leave you stranded.
BRP recommends a spring change at 2000 miles. A worn out primary spring will also offer poor performance and lack proper RPMs.

The QRS Secondary Clutch

This clutch has parts that can and will leave you stranded. The QRS Secondary clutch contains 2 rollers, referred to as secondary rollers. These rollers are known for delaminating or breaking in two with no advanced warning. It is believed that going from forward to reverse and back again too many times makes the rollers break due to the helix hitting rollers too hard when changing directions. If you have ever heard a "Clunking" noise when changing from reverse to forward, this is the helix hitting the rollers. I had a customer from Connecticut with a sled that was still under warranty lose his rollers. He was here for a one week riding trip and had less than 2K miles when his rollers failed. HI-Torque Rollers are not brittle and have an excellent service life along with excellent feedback and reviews.
